Planet Earth
Location
Planet Earth does not orbit Alpha Centauri, it orbits another star called 'Solis' (the closest star to Alpha Centauri). It's the third of 8 planets in its solar system and the only one that's naturally inhabited. Some of the other 7 planets have colonies on them, but not many.
Inhabitants
Earth is primarily inhabited by humans, but does have a wide variety of wildlife as well. The general population of humans are unaware of another solar system nearby due to it being 'necessary' to keep them in the dark, according the GEA. In fact, most humans on Earth aren't even aware that the GEA exists; only a few conspiracy theorists have worked it out. However there are many humans who do know of Alpha Centauri, and have known for hundreds of years.
The Global Earth Authority
A few centuries ago, Earth was visited for the first time and given the technology to travel through space. While the few humans who received this technology advanced very quickly, it was decided that the general public wouldn't be able to cope with these sudden advancements and society would collapse. This lead to the creation of the Global Earth Authority (GEA), who have been making sure that Earth technology advances at a manageable pace.
Throughout the years, the GEA has authorised human colonies and experiments on other planet. There have also been a few humans who discovered Alpha Centauri themselves and left Earth without the GEA's permission, like Dr. Jake.
